Today we are traveling to Holland!
On Friday we traveled to Germany and discussed St. Nick and how he brings gifts during the night between December 5th and 6th. What a surprise we had this morning when we received gifts in our shoes!
As we traveled to Holland we learned about Sinterklass. To the children of Holland, December 5th is the day Sinterklaas brings them presents. (We are already seeing similarities within the countries!) On the Eve of St. Nicholas (December 5th), Sinterklass parties are held.Children follow the clues in riddles to find little presents left by Sinterklass. (they were too excited!)
In the classroom we solved our own little riddles - thanks to my aide! We will be holding a special Sinterklaas party in the classroom. For our December Family project I am giving my parents a challenge. Each child is being asked to create their own homemade ornament for a ornament exchange. The real challenge is they need to provide a clue to see if we can guess who it is from.
I have created a freebie letter for you to utilize in your classroom. I adapted the letter from Sailing Through 1st Grade to fit my needs.
